who is (a)biotic?

Our toolbox of collaborators comfortably occupy the various realms of architecture, illustration, soil science, play-scape design, sculptural fabrication, interior design, horticulture, land development, animation, ecology, green roof installation, community design and design education...just to name a few.

Although (a)biotic shares wonderful, symbiotic relationships with our collaborators, (a)biotic maintains a nucleus core: Ben Monette and Emily McCoy.

Ben Monette, RLA, LEED AP, ASLA, MLA, is an artist and Senior Landscape Architect at the landscape architecture and urban design firm OLIN. He is a careful and exemplary designer of three-dimensional spaces and his career has focused primarily on high profile museum and public projects where he has had the opportunity to work with many world renowned architects and designers.  He has specialized in artist collaboration working with such artists as Mary Miss, Jaume Plensa, Robert Israel and most recently Janet Echelman. This unique collaboration inspires, invigorates, and enhances his own work. Ben was recognized early in his career as an outstanding designer in his graduate program at North Carolina State University’s College of Design. He was awarded the Meta-U Scholarship to study urban design in Glasgow, Scotland where he participated in a community design effort with an under-served Glaswegian neighborhood. In addition his graduate research was selected as a finalist in the North Carolina State Graduate School Symposium.  He has juried studios at Philadelphia University and Temple University and volunteers through the Community Design Collaborative and the Friends of Allen Lane Station.

Emily McCoy, RLA, ASLA, MLA, is a Landscape Architect and Director of Integrative Research for the landscape architectural firm Andropogon Associates.  Emily’s passions are rooted in both design and understanding of the natural world. Emily has cultivated a comprehensive skill-set in design, ecology, and horticulture that enables her to intricately weave together art and science within the sphere of landscape architecture.  She is devoted to exposing the beauty of ecological processes within the everyday lives of all people with the hopes of inspiring appreciation of the processes that sustain our quality of life.

Emily’s commitment to environmental education and activism is rooted in her own life experiences where she has been lucky enough to witness extraordinary beauty--- from her tree-climbing, sweet tea fueled childhood in the North Carolina piedmont to her adult life in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Appalachian Mountain Range, and her adventures studying biology throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Recently, Emily has extended her devotion to inspiring and teaching others in Temple University’s Master of Landscape Architecture program as lead instructor of the Public Lands Design Studio.

Emily holds a master’s degree in landscape architecture with a concentration in natural resource management and GIS; a bachelor of science degree in ecology; is currently pursuing a master’s degree in restoration ecology and has valuable professional experience as a horticulturist and research assistant in both the design and biology fields.
